If you want to be part of the urban revitalization efforts in the nation’s capital, LeDroit Park has a lot to offer. This neighborhood in Washington, DC is representative of the vibrant revitalization efforts being made in the nation’s capital.
Howard University teamed up with Fannie May in 1995 and began restoration on 28 historic homes and constructed 17 new townhouses, investing $10 million in new brick sidewalks, curbs, gutters and scenic improvements. It was an aggressive initiative that really paid off well!
Careful attention was given to blending the old with the new and carefully selected architects designed five townhouses that reflect one or more of the district’s most attractive architectural styles. The result was an abundance of affordable housing for middle-income families.
The initiative coincided with the investment of over $160 million dollars in housing, commercial and public development in the LeDroit Park and U Street neighborhoods. As a result of the effort, today, prices in the neighborhood sell for a median average of $450,000.
The LeDroit Park neighborhood is defined geographically as that area located immediately southeast of Howard University and its borders include W Street to the north, Rhode Island Avenue and Florida Avenue to the south, Second Street NW to the east, and Georgia Avenue to the west.
Residents in LeDroit Park enjoy quite a number of urban conveniences including easy access to public transportation, parks and shops, restaurants and more. The mix of single family homes and multi-family dwellings brings a richness to the neighborhood. LeDroit Park reflects the proud history of the civil rights movement as the formerly all-white community now reflects a cosmopolitan mix of ethnic groups.
