Best DC Neighborhoods for Families
It's no secret that Washington D.C is a great place to live. Art, Culture, amazing food, education and government are just a few of the many wonderful aspects of this great city that make living here a well rounded experience leading to a full and exciting life. However, what about those whose focus on where to settle down with their family? What aspects of D.C. neighborhoods cater to the concerns and desires of today's family? Some that top the list are communities with low crime, lots of other families, and great educational opportunities.
Low crime: It's no secret that major cities are no strangers to crime but recent statistics about D.C. may surprise you! By the mid 2000's crime rates in Washington D.C. dropped to their lowest levels in over 20 years! When looking at a crime map, one of the first things you'll notice is there's not much criminal activity happening near Bethesda and Chevy Chase! Glover park is another area devoid of much crime. Glover Park is virtually a dead end which is a very good thing! Not many streets in and out of the area mean not a lot of people coming in and out which of course leads to a lower crime rate.
Family friendly: Nearly half of the households in Buena Vista and 40% of those in Anacostia have children AND compared to other options for family friendly areas in D.C., they're also more affordable. Otherwise, an affluent neighborhood with families and children is Capitol Hill, often referred to as Stroller City. Capitol Hill also includes a mom's group called MOTH(Moms of the Hill). Other affluent neighborhoods for families include: Dupont Circle, Palisades (described as a "village in the city") , Chevy Chase and Georgetown. Mount Pleasant has lots of people that are very family friendly, a great farmer's market and an easy walk to the zoo. Glover Park has an involved, active community with block parties happening all the time and you can walk to everything. Glover Park also has a great farmer's market hosted at Hardy Middle School.
Great schools: The Palisades neighborhood is known to have great elementary schools and some close by private ones as well. Glover Park has great schools including Stoddert, one of the NW's best elementary schools. Vienna in Fairfax County has Holly Brook Montessori School. Parents rave about Holly Brook's unique and thorough approach to the educational experience.
These neighborhoods have fun and well maintained parks for entertaining kids and some restaurants feature such things as "stroller happy hour". Vienna in Fairfax County was voted fourth best place to live in America by Money Magazine. And Glover Park is praised as being the Leave it to Beaver community you want to raise your kids in. Charm and community depict these neighborhoods with clean, well kept properties, and neighbors and community members who love to be involved.
